The process of storyboarding is a revered one to me. Especially in more recent years where most of my work has been consumed by motion graphics and scouring through the mind goo offered up by UGC content. So being pegged by Mahaneela to come on board to help flesh out the narrative of the Grand Marnier × Future collaboration late last year, I jumped at the chance to offer my expertise. I’m nog sure if this project directly preceded or was hot off the heels of her Beyoncé/Levi Jeans work. A ‘killstreak’ in Call Of Duty terms if I ever saw it.
I have worked with Mahaneela on a few projects now. Her command of colour and composition is inherent in her art, be it photography or direction. As such, the storyboards I did for her on this Grand Marnier project were focused on choreography and elements crossing the lens as we pulled out to reveal the setting of the scenes.
Grand Marnier project was a video series featuring the rap mogul and the king of the hilarious ‘toxic’ memes–Future. The various vignettes feature Future paired with a Grand Marnier bottle and a unique cocktail made with the orange-flavoured liqueur. The one, continuous camera move pulls back to reveal details of the celebratory settings and the people in attendance.
The end result: the storyboards encapsulated the intricate camera movement, key narrative points and choreography that went on to make these brand promos unique. Ultimately putting the agency’s and director’s minds at ease. Quarterbacking these issues in preproduction thus gives production leaders and teams the ability to focus on other creative issues.
I particularly love the use of dark, deep yet rich and vibrant hues that complement the uniqueness and colour of the Grand Marnier liquor. Neela strikes again.
There were 4 vignettes in the series that I storyboarded. Check out some of the storyboard frames I drew below:
